KALUGIN JSC has summarized the company’s performance in 2020
The year of 2020 was anything but simple for both global and Russian iron and steel industry. It is mainly connected with the fact that since this spring most countries in the world have submerged in a new COVID-19 reality dangerous for people’s health and detrimental for business and production activities. The pandemic has definitely introduced essential changes in all activities and required absolutely different ways of interaction between the partners in achieving professional objectives. Even so our customers did not slow down the pace of reconstruction works at their blast furnace facilities. In fact, some partners proceeded to construction of new stoves designed by our company with more energy and consideration.
Now we can say that despite all the problems caused by lockdowns and restriction of movement between countries and territories our company could reorganize its relations with customers. We have introduced a new system of production process monitoring and transferred supervision services in online environments.
Adaptation of the employees to the new conditions made it possible to keep positive thinking in the company, timely perform the contractual obligations and establish an action plan for projects in the coming year.
As it is known, each decline in economic activity is followed by recovery growth and in this sense KALUGIN Company will be well prepared for project execution in these conditions.

Implemented projects in Russia
In January 2020, KALUGIN Company has successfully carried out guarantee performance testing of Kalugin Shaftless Stoves in NLMK, Lipetsk. The assigned hot blast temperature of 1300–1350 °С was achieved. All the works were performed at the highest level. Interaction with plant engineers was perfect. The customer did not find any issues related to operation of the stoves and equipment.
At the beginning of 2020, KALUGIN Company participated and was successful in the tender for reconstruction of Stove No. 33 at MMK’s Blast Furnace No. 10 in Magnitogorsk. At the end of October, the contract for design engineering, supply and supervision for all works under the project was signed. The project was already familiar to us as we haв already implemented reconstruction of Stove No.35 at the same Blast Furnace. We are performing all our contractual obligations towards MMK as per project schedule: by the end of the year we have completed design engineering of the stove shell and refractory, prepared drawings of the checker support and developed the plan of production assignments for MMK and Magnitogorsky GIPROMEZ. In 2021, along with the works under the Stove No. 33 construction project, the company shall commission Stove No. 4 at Blast Furnace No. 1 and Backdraft Chimney at Blast Furnace No. 7.
In July, four Kalugin Shaftless Stoves were commissioned at 3290 m3 Blast Furnace No. 3 of Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (Severstal). The new stoves were designed for the operating hot blast temperature of 1300 °С and dome temperature of 1400 °С in the staggered parallel mode of operation. The height of the stoves is almost 40 meters and the weight of each stove is about 500 tons. In the third quarter, final testing was carried out and the guarantee performance parameters were achieved. The Customer did not find any issues related to operation of the stoves and other equipment.
In Nizhny Tagil, trial operation of new Kalugin Shaftless Stoves constructed as per our company’s design for EVRAZ NTMK was started together with commissioning of modernized Blast Furnace No. 6.
Under the contract with EVRAZ NTMK, KALUGIN’s engineers have developed Detail Design documentation for a new stove unit consisting of three Kalugin Shaftless Stoves and Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS). Implementation of this system provided preheating of fuel gas and allowed the operators to get a significant saving on fuel resources. During execution of this project, we implemented some advance engineering solutions which enabled to get the hot blast temperature of 1300 °C and improve energy efficiency and environmental performance of the whole blast-furnace plant. Commissioning of the blast furnace together with Kalugin Shaftless Stoves was an important event for both the iron and steel works and our company.
Implemented projects worldwide
At the beginning of December, Blast Furnace No. 5 of 2580 m3 capacity with Kalugin Shaftless Stoves was commissioned at the iron and steel works of Benxi Steel Group Corporation, Benxi, China. Under the contract, our engineers have developed Basic Design and Detail Design documentation required for construction of four stoves. After commissioning the stoves will be in trial operation for three months and then our engineers will check their technical capacity for achievement of the guarantee performance parameters.
At the end of the year, the fourth Kalugin Shaftless Stove integrated into the existing Kalugin Stove Unit was commissioned at 450 m3 Smelting Furnace No. 2 of MIZUSHIMA FERROALLOY CO. LTD. (MFCL) in Kurashiki, Japan. The stove was constructed on the previously provided spot in the stove unit consisting of three Kalugin Shaftless Stoves, with two stoves being on operation since 2013. Commissioning of the new stove will make it possible to operate the stove unit in the staggered parallel mode and increase the hot blast temperature to the furnace by 30°C-50°C. This is the third project implemented by our company at iron and steel works in Japan.
Thus, KALUGIN Company has provided design engineering, construction and commissioning of Kalugin Shaftless Stoves for Russian and foreign customers during the COVID-19 pandemic in conditions of border closure between the countries and restriction of movement in the territory of Russia.
Despite the exceptional circumstances, we were able by combined efforts with our partners to keep the planned pace of work performance designing and constructing Kalugin Stoves in a routine mode.
